Second Project Outline

The focus of my lesson plan is going to be to help the students understand the enormous impact that leaders have had on our country, and to select a leader that they feel has helped to shape the world. To do this the student will use photoshop to create some sort of collage that helps describe who that person was, why they were influential and what they have done to impact us. They can pick Presidents of the United States, famous leaders like Mother Theresa or even a religous figure that has helped change the world. The main grade level that this project is going to be aimed at is 10th grade students. There is a unit on leaders and their influence in regards to politics, war, economics, and basically everyday life. I think this will allow people with all kinds of creativity to have a blast and explore. I really think that the kids will enjoy this because they will be able to be themselves in their project, and it adds a different perspective than a report. The Utah curriculum that I am going to be addressing is Standard 4 Objective 2. As an example of what I am looking for, I am going to have a picture of myself with some influential leaders, and write about why each of these leaders was effective. It will help them understand that these Presidents were significant and helped mold the country. Using Mount Rushmore will allow them to see the importance of these men and why they are carved in there. Putting my picture in there will help them see that anyone can be a powerful leader and can make an impact and that there is room for more faces. I think as far as ethics are concerned, I think it is important that they only use pictures and documents that are allowed to be shared in public presentations. I think it will be very important to keep the students away from pictures that could be very graphic or violent. They will also need to recognize plagarizm and citing other peoples works.

Sounds like fun! One concern is that your example project match what you want the students to do. For example, you tell them to select a leader and make a collage about them. But then your example is you with many leaders, more than one, and it's not really a collage about them, just a picture of you with them. I like the collage idea, and would encourage you to go with that! They could select their leader and then find some pictures on the internet about that person (make a minimum - like 8 or something) and then they have to blend those pictures together into one poster with text explaining how the pictures show important events in the person's life.

I think it'd be a great project!
