To do this the student will use photoshop to create some sort of collage that helps describe who that person was, why they were influential and what they have done to impact us. They can pick Presidents of the United States, famous leaders like Mother Theresa or even a religous figure that has helped change the world. The main grade level that this project is going to be aimed at is 10th grade students. There is a unit on leaders and their influence in regards to politics, war, economics, and basically everyday life. I think this will allow people with all kinds of creativity to have a blast and explore. I really think that the kids will enjoy this because they will be able to be themselves in their project, and it adds a different perspective than a report. The Utah curriculum that I am going to be addressing is Standard 4 Objective 2. As an example of what I am looking for, I am going to have a picture of myself with some influential leaders, and write about why each of these leaders was effective. It will help them understand that these Presidents were significant and helped mold the country. Using Mount Rushmore will allow them to see the importance of these men and why they are carved in there. Putting my picture in there will help them see that anyone can be a powerful leader and can make an impact and that there is room for more faces. I think as far as ethics are concerned, I think it is important that they only use pictures and documents that are allowed to be shared in public presentations. I think it will be very important to keep the students away from pictures that could be very graphic or violent. They will also need to recognize plagarizm and citing other peoples works.

Personal Reflection on Mini Lessons

I thought that this was a great activity because it allowed us to teach each other our different sections and this made it so we each knew our part really well. We started off with Molly talking about Privacy and security. She showed us a mini video calling tracking teresa. It was really interesting to see just how easy it was for the hacker to access all of her information and find out all of her personal items. Molly also talked about viruses and spam mail. The next girl was in charge of cheating. She asked us to locate a paper written on a certain book. It took us less than 30 seconds. It was amazing how easily accessable all of these papers were. She talked about identifying cheating and how to recognize it. As well as ways of combating it, and web pages that are designed to help teachers. We then learned about copyrights and their importance and significance. I was amazed at how easy it is to break these laws. She provided examples of how easily the internet is used to illegally share things like movies and music. This is very evident in our society. The other girl talked about fair use of intellectual property. This was interesting because I hadnt heard very much about it. She was mentioning how alot of teachers have a lot of misconceptions about what is allowed and what isnt. A lot of teachers do things illegally without even knowing it, this is pretty obvious in a lot of settings. I was last and I talked about flexible copyrights, that allow people to use and add onto anothers work with their permission and in certain situations. Its free and very helpful for both the artist and the user. I think that more and more people are taking advantage of this valuable resource.

Lesson Plan Overview

Lesson Plan Focus
For the focus of my lesson plan, I am going to use the Civil War. The teacher was learning how to make technology use more effective for her students. The teacher then taught her students how to use it to interact with students from other schools to compare results.
How was class management maintained?
The class seemed really interested in what they were doing and they had a good time interacting with the other classes. It seemed as though it made the teachers job a lot easier.
How was the technology integrated into the lesson plan?
They were talking about pollution, and so they did some testing and compared there schools pollution levels with those of the schools that they were corresponding with. They were able to show all of their results on the web, making it easy for them too see how it worked for all the groups. It also made it easier to update and monitor their results.
Was the focus on the technology or on the subject?
I think that it was mainly focused on the subject. I think that they were trying to show the kids the importance of keeping pollution levels down, and it also taught them how to compare and contrast the conditions that affect various people.
Did the teacher follow any of your "rules of thumb"?
The teacher wasn’t really on the video that much, but she did provide the students with some skills that were similar to ones that I think are beneficial. She basically taught them the importance of working together and coordinating their efforts.
What barriers do you think might have made using technology in this lesson difficult?
I think that the program was probably a little difficult for the teacher to get familiar with. In fact she mentioned at the beginning that she didn’t have a lot of experience with technology and that it took her a while to learn it.
How could you overcome these barriers?
You could have the teachers teach each other once they have gotten the grasp of how to use it, they could instruct each other and make it easier for each other to learn.
What other technologies or methods could have been used instead?
They could use a lot of other types of technology to get their students involved, but this program really seemed to help the students grasp these concepts. I don’t know any other programs dealing with pollution, but having the kids corresponding is essential.

How could you teach this same lesson with limited access to technology? (For example, maybe in a one-computer classroom)
It would probably not be as effective if you only had one computer, but you could project the images from the results onto a screen and have them fill out worksheets about the other groups information.
How could you use this same technology in your own teaching? What learning activities could this technology support?
I think that I wouldn’t really need to use the pollution part of this teaching plan. But I could use the idea of interacting with other classrooms to help get the students familiar with each other and other parts of the world. As technology continues to grow, so does the ease of communicating with those in different places.
What other things should teachers be able to do with this technology?
With technology increasing as fast as it is, we have been making huge strides in helping students identify with other areas around the world and so it would be interesting especially with History to have them learn how to implement technology into their own lives.

Nets-Students Digital Library-- Navigating by Landmarks

Who was using the technology, students or teacher?
The students were using the technology to get better acquainted with how to navigate and use MapQuest and other tools to help them gain familiarity with using the internet to get from place to place. How was class management maintained?
She first described what they were going to do, and then she led the kids through the directions that helped them understand what they need to do. The kids seemed like they really were enjoying themselves. How was the technology integrated into the lesson plan?
They started by designing their own map and then they compared their map to the one on the computer. This helped the kids get a better idea of how to draw a map, as well as following directions. Was the focus on the technology or on the subject?
I think that the focus was on using technology to teach the subject. It was used to help the kids see that they can estimate directions and then use the internet to confirm the directions. Did the teacher follow any of your "rules of thumb"?
The teacher did a real good job of giving the students a background into what they would be using. She also made it apply to real life situations. She did a good job of making technology fit into the lesson plan. What barriers do you think might have made using technology in this lesson difficult?
It might be hard to keep track of where all of the kids are at and how far a long they are. It would be hard to make sure that all of the kids are keeping up and follow along. How could you overcome these barriers?
You could assign the kids buddies to make sure that they were grasping the assignment and helping them teach each other. What other technologies or methods could have been used instead?
I think that they could draw their own map, then look at a real map, and then use the internet so they could get a better idea of all of the resources available to them.
How could you teach this same lesson with limited access to technology? (For example, maybe in a one-computer classroom)
I think that showing the kids a demonstration and then have them find it on the map and then you could project it so that all of the kids could see, maybe even walk the distance and use the service and locate a local business. How could you use this same technology in your own teaching? What learning activities could this technology support?
When dealing with geography it would probably be really helpful to have the students gain familiarity with how to locate certain places and to be able to identify how to get to a number of different places. What other things should teachers be able to do with this technology?
I think that they could use these programs to help students get familiar with different locations of cities and places around the world. It could help them get familiar with how to locate a number of different spots and key cities in an area.

Assignment on Technology in the Classroom

Every time I stop to think about the technological advances that have taken place in the last ten years I am amazed at how far we have come. In a world where technological advances are frequent and always changing it is critical for us to keep up with these advances. I recall my fourth grade class going to the computer lab and we played a computer game called Oregon Trail. We were so impressed by this technology and it helped us get excited about computers. Our teacher also would constantly encourage us to practice typing things on our keyboards.
My teacher recognized the importance of getting students started early with these advances so that as advances got more and more difficult we were able to keep up with them. Our teacher probably could've used more assignments on computers and maybe even had a computer class as part of a unit of class.
